OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Aug 31, 2007 -- The Canadian Dental Hygienists Association congratulatesOntario Dental Hygienists on long awaited legislation thatwill take effect on September 1, 2007. The Ontario Governmentis modernizing Dental Hygiene legislation to allow dentalhygienists to practise on their own without a dentist. Thiswill improve access to care, as it will allow dental hygieniststo use alternate service delivery models. They will be ableto provide services to the public in long-term care facilities,private clinics, community health centres, rural and remoteareas. Since dental hygienists have portable instruments,they can provide services to under serviced areas usingmobile clinics. The only situation where a dental hygienistwill be required to work with a dentist is when the patientpresents with specific medical conditions. The College ofDental Hygienists of Ontario is in place to regulate dentalhygienists and ensure that the public receives quality,safe dental hygiene services.

There is a growing trend for provinces to update their dentalhygiene legislation and Ontario joins both Alberta and BritishColumbia in having done so. In these provinces, the publiccan receive oral health services from the most appropriateoral health care professional, when they need it, and wherethey need it.
