Disability Awareness Night at the Charleston River Dogs

DAN is a national program intended to increase awarenessand support forthe 54.6 million Americans classified as having some formof intellectualor physical disability in the United States. The DAN Program,which nowencompasses both Major League and Minor League baseballvenues, issupported by Shire Pharmaceuticals. In addition to raisingawareness, theDAN event provides an opportunity for many clients and staffof localdisability organizations to attend the ballgame, thanksto free ticketsdonated by EP and Shire Pharmaceuticals.

"Our goal is to help all Americans understand that we willbecome astronger nation and better human beings when we learn toregard people withdisabilities and special needs as people to be respected,not as problemsto be confronted," said Joseph M. "Due to my extensive work in the ADHD community, it is veryimportant to methat people are aware ADHD is a real and treatable disorderthat affectsapproximately 7.8 percent of all school-age children andthat with propertreatment people with ADHD can lead normal lives," saidDr. Upadhyaya.

Disability Awareness Night began in the summer of 2002 whenExceptionalParent magazine combined forces with the New York Yankeesand Boston RedSox to create the first event of its kind focused on peoplewith specialneeds.
