Spectrum Announces Support for the Joint Tactical Radio System Modem Hardware Ab
Spectrum Signal Processing by Vecima ("Spectrum"), a leadingprovider of software defined radio (SDR) technology, todayannounced the early availability for qualified customersof the industry's first commercial-off-the-shelf wirelessmodem solution supporting the U.S. Joint Tactical RadioSystem's (JTRS's) Modem Hardware Abstraction Layer (MHAL)Application Programming Interfaces (API). This powerfulsolution consists of Spectrum's flexComm(TM) SDR-4000 wirelessmodem, a rugged, Software Communications Architecture (SCA)enabled "IF-to-Ethernet" processing subsystem and the SCA-compliantMHAL API. The MHAL API was designed specifically to enhanceportability of waveform components and radio applicationsoperating on specialized processing devices such as FieldProgrammable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) and Digital Signal Processors(DSPs). By offering a hardware platform that supports theMHAL API, Spectrum simplifies the porting of SCA compliantwaveforms to the SDR-4000 platform, accelerating time todeployment for our military communications (MILCOM) customerssupporting the specifications defined by the JTRS program.
"Spectrum has invested heavily over the years to providea high-performance hardware abstraction layer and API library,known as quicComm(TM), for all of our modem platforms asa means to maximize the reuse and portability of applicationcomponents," said Mark Briggs, VP Marketing at Spectrum."Support for the MHAL API on SDR-4000 came as a naturalextension of quicComm, which also acted as the basis forthe now deprecated SCA 3.0 specification, providing Spectrum'scustomers with a powerful tool to accelerate their radiodevelopment efforts."
The U.S. Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO) for the JTRSprogram announced the release of the MHAL API on June 6,2007. The MHAL API abstracts the modem hardware and radioOperating Environment from the waveform applications toprovide a consistent waveform host environment across SCA-compliantplatforms. The SCA itself is an open specification sponsoredby the U.S. Department of Defense JTRS program that standardizesthe deployment, management, interconnection and intercommunicationof software application components in embedded, distributed-computingcommunication systems. The SCA specifies software, hardware,security, and networking architecture requirements for open,programmable SDR systems with flexible, re-programmablecommunication capabilities.
Spectrum's SDR-4000 is a 3U CompactPCI® subsystem thatis comprised of two major component level hardware products:the PRO-4600 SDR modem processing engine and the XMC-3321dual transceiver input/output mezzanine card.
The SDR-4000 supports the SCA Core Framework and MHAL APIwithin a standards-based software environment and includes:
- The SCARI++ SCA Core Framework from Communications ResearchCentre Canada;
- The ORBexpress® RT real-time CORBA Object RequestBroker from Objective Interface Systems, Inc.;
- The INTEGRITY® Real Time Operating System and MULTI®Integrated Development Environment from Green Hills Software,Inc.;
The SDR-4000 can be optimized for program specific size,weight, power consumption, cost and rugged requirements.
The MHAL API Library Support for SDR-4000 is available toqualified customers as an optional software package. Pleasecontact Spectrum for pricing and further information.
