Metal Jewelry Sold at Big Lots Recalled

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Buy-Rite Designs Inc. on Wednesday recalled about 43,000 metal bracelets and other jewelry made in China because they contain high levels of lead.

The recalled jewelry was sold under the "Sparkle City Charm Bracelets" and "Tack Pin Sets" names, the CPSC said. The bracelets have silver-colored star and butterfly charms and clear and pink beads hanging from a silver-colored chain. The tack pins are silver butterflies or stars with clear and pink beads.

Buy-Rite of Freehold, N.J., imported the jewelry, which was sold at Big Lots Inc. stores nationwide from August 2005 through April 2007 for about $1, the CPSC said.

Lead is toxic if ingested by young children. So far, no injuries or incidents stemming from the jewelry have been reported, the agency said.

Consumers should take the jewelry away from children and either return it to the store or contact Buy-Rite for a refund, the CPSC said.

Under a settlement with New York state announced earlier Wednesday, Big Lots agreed to stop selling the products, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said.

Big Lots, which has 1,300 discount stores, agreed to pay a $1,000 penalty as part of the settlement.

Shares of Big Lots rose 26 cents to $20.04 in midday trading Wednesday.
